The HAL difference

Holland America Line combines elegant cruising with immersive travel, offering uncrowded, mid-size ships with spacious viewing decks, regionally inspired cuisine, world-class entertainment, and authentic experiences.

Alaska

Alaska is high on people’s wish lists and HAL has been sailing there for more than 75 years, making it one of the most experienced cruise lines in the region. Through HAL’s Alaska Up Close programme, guests are guaranteed an immersive, culturally rich experience, through partnerships with local experts and naturalists who can bring Alaska’s history, wildlife, and cultures to life, both on and off the ship. Ships go directly up to Alaska’s most picturesque glaciers and rotate for a 360-degree view

In Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, HAL brings National Park Service Rangers on board to point out areas of interest and answer questions. Members of the local Huna Tlingit tribe share ancient stories about the history of the bay, which is their ancestral homeland. Wildlife experts lead workshops on every cruise, helping guests look out for eagles, dolphins, whales, moose, caribou and perhaps a grizzly bear.

Guests on a Denali or Yukon cruise can visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a refuge for orphaned and injured wildlife, which are kept in large enclosures resembling their natural habitat. Find out more about HAL’s Alaska Up Close programme here.

Canada and New England

HAL’s Canada and New England itineraries, meanwhile, offer a mix of coastal charm, colonial history, French-Canadian culture, lighthouses, seaside villages, and natural beauty, taking passengers to destinations such as Québec City, Montréal, Halifax, Charlottetown, Portland and Bar Harbor. Cruises operate from spring through to October, and, with a choice of itinerary lengths from seven to 14 nights, there is plenty of choice.

Canada and New England highlights include cruising the St Lawrence River from Québec City to Montréal under a series of bridges onboard Volendam, under which larger cruise ships can’t pass. A large shore excursion programme allows guests to explore colonial Newport, Boston’s historic sites and Atlantic Canada’s national parks.

Meanwhile, guests can enjoy seasonal specialties such as New England berries, Maine lobster, wild Prince Edward Island mussels and more.

Live music onboard

A big draw for HAL passengers is its Music Walk entertainment lineup.

B.B. King’s Blues Club brings Beale Street in Memphis right onboard selected HAL ships, with an eight-piece band of two vocalists backed by rhythm and horn sections entertaining guests most nights with soulful R&B, blues, and rock-’n’-roll in an intimate setting. The Club also serves themed cocktails, adding to the classic blues supper club atmosphere.

Rolling Stone, meanwhile, is another live music venue, created in partnership with Rolling Stone magazine, where guests can enjoy R&B, pop and rock.
