Experience authentic Andros with Sunvil

In partnership with the Greece National Tourism Organisation

Sunvil specialises in authentic Greek experiences, creating itineraries that feature locally owned accommodations and small-scale resorts away from the crowds. With the chance for agents to win a holiday to one of the operator’s destinations, now is an excellent time to explore Greece’s secret corners.

In our fourth and final spotlight on hidden destinations, we head to Andros, located in the north of the Cyclades archipelago. With Santorini and Mykonos to the south, Andros is a lesser-visited island, offering your clients a quieter option.

The island is around 90 minutes from Athens’ Rafina port by ferry, making it a great spot to twin with the Greek capital. It’s also two and a half hours by ferry from Mykonos.

As the second largest island in the Cyclades, Andros offers clients a perfect blend of beaches, culture and authentic Greek village life.

When it comes to beaches, Andros has sandy beaches and secluded coves and the charming resort of Batsi (pictured) serves as the ideal base with excellent dining options and a handful of bars to enjoy Greek hospitality.

For cultural enthusiasts, recommend a day trip to Andros Town, the island’s capital since Venetian times, where clients can explore both the acclaimed Archaeological Museum and Museum of Modern Art.

Active travellers will also appreciate the Andros Route’s 100km network of marked walking trails, while those preferring to drive can discover the island’s 70 rural villages, mountain landscapes, valleys, and historic monasteries.

Where to stay

The Chrissi Akti is a long-established family-run hotel just over the road from the start of Batsi’s excellent sandy beach, offering 61 rooms with modern amenities and great for clients who want to stay close to the beach with everything close to hand and no hills to climb.

Recommended itinerary

To explore the Northern Cyclades, this 11-day itinerary takes travellers to Andros, Tinos and Syros, which have all retained a low-key tourism industry and an authentic Greek atmosphere.

What the experts say

Sunvil Destination Specialist Jackie Gogonas: “Andros is more reasonably-priced than other islands in the Cyclades archipelago, but with all the charm.”

Sunvil Director Dudley der Parthog: “Andros focuses on true ‘filoxenia’, meaning the warmth of welcome by locals to visitors. The hotels are largely small, family-run where Greek hospitality shines through. And, as the second largest Cyclades island there is plenty of scope for exploration.”
